Our Engagement

A bit overdue, but here are some pictures from the surprise proposal in Kuala Lumpur on Good Friday, April 14, 2006.  As you may recall from a previous post, Jialin flew into KL from Penang believing she was there to attend a student conference hosted by Eaglepoint Covenant Fellowship, the Every Nation church in KL.  I flew in on a redeye from London and was exhausted, but thanks to the help of many friends, I did not have to do too much planning on my own.  I am truly grateful to everyone who helped make this day so fun and memorable.  These pictures were taken from our wedding website which is almost finished but is still in its final stages of construction.  The website will be launched next week.

Kuala Lumpur at night
I proposed to Jialin at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers.  Prior to the proposal, I sent Jia on a little scavenger hunt at the Mandarin Oriental hotel which is the building in the center of this picture.

Hotel main lobby with a card from my niece Kaitlyn
It reads: Jialin - please marry my Kevin samchon.

Preparing the scavenger hunt clues
I hurriedly typed up the clues at the hotel business center on Mandarin Oriental letterhead so Jia would not recognize my handwriting.

I was jetlagged and tired but excited about proposing to Jialin

Tulips from Holland
Doris, the hotel manager at the Mandarin Oriental, special-ordered these beautiful tulips for me from Holland on a last-minute basis when I told her tulips (and lilies) were Jia's favorite flowers.

Jia begins her scavenger hunt, still unaware of the real reason for her trip

The final clue at the hotel
After wandering the hotel for awhile chasing clues, Jia ended up in the hotel room where she saw the bouquet of flowers lying on the bed. At this point she realized something special was going on since I was the only one who knew that tulips and lilies are her favorite flowers.

Final clue outside beneath the Petronas Twin Towers
The final clue came with blindfolds, which Jia was asked to put on.

Without saying a word, I held Jia's hand...

...and she knew it was me right away

The proposal
After a long embrace and some tears, I presented Jialin the ring and asked her to marry me.

Beautiful evening
After some heavy thunderstorms earlier in the day, the weather cleared up and the rain and thunder went away.

Here is a picture of "Almond Blossom," perhaps my favorite painting by my favorite painter, Vincent van Gogh.  Van Gogh was troubled psychologically and emotionally throughout his career as an artist, but he also had some moments of pure joy, especially when he felt at peace with the nature around him.  Van Gogh painted this painting after learning from his brother Theo that Theo had just named his son "Vincent" after him.  Van Gogh painted passionately, as usual, with intense and harmonious colors and brushstrokes that reflect his abounding optimism and joy of being an uncle.  Each time I see this painting I am reminded of my nephew Peter.  You can see this painting in person at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands (one of my favorite places in Europe), or you can buy a print at www.art.com.  Putting the print up on one of your walls will enhance the quality of your life by up to 1.0%.

Here is a better picture of the MoMA "Starry Night" (a bit crooked, but richer in color) which I took using Wayne's camera (I think) when we saw it a few years ago in NY.
